Mills near Tiverton in Devon

Hotel | Bed and Breakfast | Accommodation | Tiverton | Devon

Devon is home to several historic mills, many of which are preserved as heritage attractions. The main types open to the public are working watermills and a historic woollen mill, several of which have additional facilities like cafes and shops. Coldharbour Mill Located in Uffculme, this is one of the oldest woollen mills in the UK, in continuous production since 1797. It is a working wool museum where visitors can see traditional textiles being made on Victorian machinery, including a large breast-shot waterwheel and steam engines on special event days. The site includes a shop and cafe, and dogs are welcome in the grounds and mill. Otterton Mill Situated by the River Otter in an idyllic valley, this ancient working watermill has records dating back to the Domesday survey in 1068. The mill workings are open for a free self-guided tour, and it features an award-winning cafe/restaurant, farm shop, bakery, and gallery. Otters and beavers are known to visit the river nearby. Bickleigh Mill An 18th-century historic working water mill near Tiverton that now functions as a large rural shopping, eating, and recreation destination. The mill is open seven days a week, and visitors can explore the machinery, enjoy riverside walks, and dine at the on-site bistro. Hele Cornmill & Tearoom This Grade II listed watermill in North Devon dates back to at least 1525 and is fully working, grinding organic wheat to produce flour for its adjacent award-winning tearoom. Note that due to the historic nature of the building, it is not suitable for wheelchair users due to steps and stairs, and dogs are not allowed inside the mill for hygiene reasons. Manor Mill Located in the village of Branscombe, this fully-functioning Victorian watermill is run by the National Trust. Visitors can see the impressive waterwheel turn the cogs and stones to produce fresh flour. The mill is typically open on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons. Clyston Mill This National Trust-managed watermill in Broadclyst is a historic agricultural building set by the River Clyst. The ground floor has level access, but upper floors are only accessible by steep, ladder-like steps. It has limited opening times, mainly during May and September, so check the National Trust website before visiting. There are no facilities on-site, but nearby public toilets are available in the Victory Hall car park. Cricklepit Mill Located in Exeter and owned by the Devon Wildlife Trust, this is one of the South West's last remaining watermills. Visitors can see the mill machinery in operation and explore the on-site wildlife garden. It is generally open Monday to Friday.
