History of Huntsham:
Huntsham's history spans Iron Age earthworks (Huntsham Castle) through medieval land ownership by families like de Stanton, Dunsland, and Bere, to becoming a significant estate for the Troyte family who built the current Huntsham Court (1868-70) and restored All Saints Church in the 19th century, later becoming a hotel and venue, famous for Douglas Adams writing So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish there. Early History & Medieval Ownership Iron Age: Site of an Iron Age hillfort, Huntsham Castle, noted for its earthworks. Domesday Book (1086): Held by Alric, then Odo Son of Gamelin. Medieval Lords: Manor passed through families like de Stanton (c. 1242), Peter de Dunsland (1307), and the Bere family (from 1309), with Thomas Bere serving as MP for Tiverton. The Troyte Era & Huntsham Court 18th Century: The estate was purchased by the Lucas family, then the Troyte family. 19th Century Revival: William Troyte bought it in 1760; his kinsman Arthur Henry Dyke Acland inherited in the 1850s, taking the name Troyte. New Court: Arthur's son, Charles Arthur William Troyte, built the present Huntsham Court (1868-70) in Tudor Gothic style, as the old Tudor manor was deemed unfit. Church Restoration: Arthur Acland Troyte and his wife restored All Saints Church in the 1850s. Modern Times Literary Fame: Author Douglas Adams wrote So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish at Huntsham Court when it was a hotel, even dedicating the book to it. Current Use: Huntsham Court now operates as a country house party and wedding venue.
