History of Tiverton Parkway Station:
Tiverton Parkway's history centers on its 1986 opening as a modern replacement for the older Tiverton Junction station, built for convenience near M5 Junction 27 and the A361 link road, serving as a key park-and-ride, on the former site of Sampford Peverell Halt which closed in 1964; the new station provided better access, replacing a less-used junction station and the old Tiverton branch line, becoming vital for North Devon travel. Precursors & Location: Tiverton Road/Junction: The original main line station, Tiverton Road (later Junction), opened in 1844 for the Bristol & Exeter Railway, with a branch line to the town center (Tiverton) opening in 1848, known for its "Tivvy Bumper" shuttle. Sampford Peverell Halt: The new Parkway station sits on the site of this former halt, which opened in 1928 and closed in 1964, with its tracks later streamlined. The Parkway Era: Opening: Tiverton Parkway opened on May 12, 1986, by Transport Minister David Mitchell. Purpose: It was strategically placed near the M5/A361 junction, creating a convenient park-and-ride for access to North Devon and avoiding town centers. Closure of Predecessors: Tiverton Junction closed the day before Parkway opened (May 11, 1986), with the Tiverton branch line already closed in 1967. Modern Development: Expansion: Increased demand led to a new, larger car park opening in 2007, improving facilities for travelers using the station.
