Originally dating back to the early 1600's Whitnage Cottage offers guests clean and comfortable accommodation on a bed and breakfast or room only basis in a quiet location close to Tiverton in Mid Devon. Other hot drink options include herbal teas (camomile, earl grey, peppermint and green) and fruit teas (red berries, cranberry and raspberry, mango and strawberry, blackcurrant and blueberry and st clements), red bush, hot chocolate, cappuccino, latte and decaffeinated tea and coffee.

Brambles Bed and Breakfast has a large south-facing garden with views towards Tiverton and the Exe Valley, the Blackdown Hills and Culm Valley. Heavily planted borders, with hundreds of hardy perennials, azaleas, camellia, ferns, flowering quince, forsythia, fuchsias, lilac, magnolias, pieris, rhododendrons, roses, skimmia and viburnum. Terraced with seating areas, lawns, paths, patios, hedges, green houses, sheds, plant tables and pots, the garden provides a welcoming and tranquil environment for guests to appreciate. There are often plants for sale and free to take away.

The garden has over one hundred types of garden plants, and different varieties, including achillea, bergenia, canna lilies, geums, hardy geraniums, hellebores, hosta, Japanese anemones, peonies, red hot pokers, salvia, agapanthus, alliums, bluebells, crocosmia, daylilies, iris, kafir lilies, lupins, oriental poppies, penstemon, pulmonaria, and Siberian iris. Most are sourced locally from the Old Well Garden Centre and Cove Garden Nursery.

The garden attracts a variety of wildlife, including bats, foxes, hedgehogs, rabbits and squirrels. If you sit in the garden at twilight on a summer evening you will often spot bats flying between the trees.

Brambles Bed and Breakfast is an ideal setting for bird enthusiasts to see garden birds up close. There are four bird feeding stations dotted around the garden, bird baths and water troughs for the birds to find fresh water. We feed a mixture of seeds, fat blocks and peanuts to attract more than twenty different species including blackbirds, blue tits, bullfinches, chaffinches, coal tits, collared doves, dunnocks, goldfinches, great tits, great spotted woodpeckers, green finches, long-tailed tits, nuthatches, robins, siskins, song thrush, sparrows, starlings, wood pigeons, wrens and yellowhammer. One of the feeding stations is opposite the dining room window and guests are likely to see a variety of birds feeding at breakfast.

The West Country is home to many popular bird watching destinations, and the Tiverton, Wellington, and Cullompton areas are known for their diverse bird populations, with occasional sightings of rare and unusual species that are resident throughout the year, or birds that make the area their temporary home. Some common summer visitors include house martins, swallows, swifts, chiffchaffs, whitethroats, and willow warblers, and winter visitors include fieldfares, firecrest, lapwings, redwings and skylarks.

There are several bird of prey and owl centres in Devon, including Yarak Birds of Prey and Hawkridge Birds of Prey. Buzzards, kestrels, red kites and sparrowhawks are often spotted flying or perched on poles in the Tiverton area. The buzzards are often heard calling and observed gliding in the thermals overhead, and sparrowhawks have been seen perching on the bird feeders and the garden fence on more than one occasion. There are several owl species in the West Country, such as the barn owl, tawny owl, and the little owl, however although occasionally heard they are rarely seen. There are also many corvid species in the area including jays, ravens, crows, rooks, jackdaws and magpies. You will also come across pheasants in the local lanes, footpaths and surrounding fields, and they sometimes venture into the garden too.

Less than a mile from Brambles Bed and Breakfast at Sampford Peverell, this tranquil location offers a variety of fish species including tench, bream, carp, roach, perch and pike. Badgers are rarely seen, due to their nocturnal habits, but are occasionally spotted by guests walking back from the pub after the sun has set. One of the most elusive mammals to be found locally is the otter. In recent years they have made a strong recovery in the West Country and evidence of their activity is being recorded regularly in the nearby Grand Western Canal Country Park. Most sightings are early in the morning or late in the evening.
